ICC -Room to Read at the ICC Women’s World Cup India 2013

The Background

Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organisations and governments, the charity aims to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

The ICC began its partnership with Room to Read at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 with a series of player activities, with Virat Kohli, Shane Watson and Angelo Mathews becoming global Room to Read Ambassadors. The partnership continued at the ICC WT20 Sri Lanka.

Room to Read “Check out Challenge”

The “check out challenge” is a call to action to all Room to Read supporters, external audiences and partners to invest in existing programs and help provide a million plus books to children across the world. The ways of doing so will be either through a library or helping Room to Read publish an original children’s book. In 2013, Room to Read will publish 1.5 million copies of our original children's books. These stories and others will fill the shelves of Room to Read's network of more than 15,000 school libraries—opening up a world of imagination to young readers across Asia and Africa.

ICC supports Room to Read “Checkout Challenge”

Starting a school library:

ICC is funding a classroom library in Mumbai which Room to Read will create to reach school children with books and library resources. The library will serve hundreds of students annually and include as many as 1,000-1,500 local language and English language books.

The library will include: age-appropriate books, furniture, games, puzzles, posters, library management training, and ongoing monitoring to ensure proper access and usage.

Once the library is complete a final report detailing the resources provided to the library and the community served to directly will connect with the ICC.

Library location will be identified by end of ICC Women’s World Cup India 2013

A press call with member of Indian Women’s team will be organized (please check details below) during a visit to existing Room to Read library in Mumbai.
